FIN500 Principles of Finance: SEU MBA Help

FIN500 Principles of Finance is one of three courses in Semester 1 of the SEU MBA, and it is the one where the grade is decided by a small number of assignments.

Eighty per cent of your FIN500 mark comes from six critical thinking assignments. Quizzes and discussions together account for one fifth. Spread your effort evenly across all three and you are spending most of your time on a fifth of the grade.

This page covers what FIN500 involves, the six assignments problem by problem, where students lose marks, and how we help.

What Is FIN500 Principles of Finance?

FIN500 is a three-credit course in Semester 1 of the Saudi Electronic University MBA, delivered over fourteen weeks.

It teaches financial management from both a technical and a practical angle, so that you can read the financial health of an organisation and make decisions inside it. The core ground is shareholder value, value-based financial management, financial statement analysis, risk and return, cost of capital, capital budgeting, capital structure and working capital management.

The work is quantitative. You calculate, then you interpret. Assignments ask you to run the numbers in a Word document and show your working, and marks are given for the working as well as the answer.

Rewrite the course description in your own words. The paragraph currently on your page is SEU’s syllabus text, and it appears verbatim on dozens of other sites. Google has no reason to rank your copy of it. The version above says the same thing in language that is yours.

How FIN 500 Is Graded

This is the number that should shape how you spend your semester.

Component

Weight

What it is

Critical thinking assignments

80%

Six problem sets, 100 to 110 points each

Quizzes

11%

Six quizzes at 15 points, covering two weeks each

Discussion participation

9%

Six discussions at 10 points

Eighty per cent of your FIN500 grade sits in six documents. They are also the longest single pieces of work in the course.

The practical implication is blunt. A student who treats the discussion boards and the quizzes as equal priorities is allocating most of their week to a fifth of their grade. The critical thinking assignments are where FIN500 is passed or failed.

Check one thing against your own syllabus. The three components above total 100%, which leaves no weighting for the Week 8 midterm exam listed in the course schedule. Either the midterm sits inside one of the three categories or the published split is incomplete. Confirm it with your instructor in Week 1 rather than discovering it in Week 8.

The Six FIN500 Critical Thinking Assignments

Each assignment is a set of problems completed in a Word document. You must show your work to receive credit, and each needs a cover page.

Module 2 — Understanding Financial Statements and Cash Flow (100 points)

Two problems: preparing financial statements, and preparing the statement of cash flows.

It looks like the gentlest assignment of the six and it is the one most often lost on presentation. Statements have a required order and required subtotals. Getting the arithmetic right and the format wrong still costs marks.

Module 4 — Financial Ratios and Time Value of Money (110 points)

Seven problems: compound interest, future value, present value, financial ratios, present value of an annuity, future value of an annuity, and annuity payments.

This is the assignment that separates the class. Time value of money is mechanically unforgiving — one misplaced period or one wrong compounding frequency runs through every answer after it.

Module 6 — Measurement of Risk and Return in Investing (110 points)

Seven problems: rate of return and standard deviation, holding-period return, holding-period gain in SAR, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, the security market line, required rate of return under CAPM, and expected return with standard deviation.

CAPM appears three times in one assignment. Learn it properly here and Module 11 becomes much shorter.

Module 9 — Valuation and Characteristics of Bonds (110 points)

Five problems: bond valuation, yield to maturity, bond valuation with semiannual coupon payments, zero-coupon bond valuation, and the bondholder’s expected rate of return.

The semiannual variant is where marks go. Halving the coupon and doubling the periods is easy to state and easy to half-apply.

Module 11 — Stock Valuation and the Cost of Capital (110 points)

Eight problems: preferred stock market price, common stock market price, preferred stock value, growth rate, the dividend constant growth model, required rate of return under CAPM, cost of debt, and weighted average cost of capital.

The longest assignment in the course, and WACC pulls together almost everything before it. Leave more time for this one than the point value suggests.

Module 12 — Project Evaluation and Capital Budgeting (100 points)

Five problems: net present value and internal rate of return, profitability index and payback period, uneven cash flows, calculating free cash flows, and calculating project cash flows and NPV.

The final assignment, and the one closest to a real management decision. Answers that compute NPV correctly and never say whether to accept the project lose the interpretation marks.

The FIN500 Assignment Cover Page

Every critical thinking assignment needs a cover page. Missing it is the cheapest mark you will ever lose.

  • Course code with CRN code
  • Course name

  • Maximum points on the assignment

  • Student name
  • Submission date

Keep your example cover page image on the page. It is genuinely useful and it is one of the few original assets you already have.

The FIN500 Week-by-Week Schedule

Replace the current fourteen-week table. What is on the page now includes the full APA reference for every reading — hundreds of words of citations. No student searches for them, and they push your own content below the fold. Keep the chapter mapping and the assessment column. Drop the reference lists, or move them behind a collapsible “full reading list” toggle.

FIN500 Is Taught in a Saudi and Islamic Finance Context

This is the part of FIN500 that generic finance help does not prepare you for, and it is the reason a tutor who has not seen the SEU version will miss things.

The reading list is not a standard Western finance syllabus. It runs Saudi Vision 2030 alongside shareholder value theory, riba and Islamic mortgages alongside the time value of money, sukuk certification alongside bond valuation, and Islamic versus conventional stock indexes alongside equity valuation. Oil price variation and its effect on Saudi capital markets appears in the cost of capital week.

That has two consequences for your marks.

  • Your worked answers stay conventional, but your written analysis should not. The calculations follow standard finance. The discussion and interpretation sections reward you for placing the answer in the Saudi market the readings describe.
  • Discussion posts are where this counts most. A post on capital structure that references the Saudi partial-privatisation literature from the Week 1 readings reads as engaged. One that could have been written for any course anywhere does not.

Currency matters too. Module 6 asks for a holding-period gain in SAR, not dollars. Small detail, easy mark to drop.

Where Students Struggle in FIN500

No finance background

The SEU MBA accepts graduates from any discipline and FIN500 assumes none. Ratio analysis and discounting arrive in the first four weeks, and an engineer and an accountant sit the same Module 4 problem set.

Time value of money

Conceptually simple, mechanically unforgiving. Compounding frequency, period counts and the annuity-due versus ordinary-annuity distinction are the three places most marks are lost, and the error propagates through every subsequent answer.

Showing the work

The brief says to show your work to receive credit. A correct final figure with no visible method scores below a partly wrong answer with clear working. Students who calculate in a spreadsheet and paste only the result systematically undersell themselves.

Interpretation, not calculation

Getting the number is half the task. The assignments ask what the number means for the decision, and that is where the top band sits. NPV computed and no recommendation given is the single most common way to lose an otherwise strong answer.

Volume in one week

Module 11 is eight problems. Module 4 is seven, Module 6 is seven. These are not evening tasks, and they land in weeks that also carry a quiz.

Eight to twelve hours a week, on top of everything else

FIN500 runs alongside ECN500 and RES500, in a first semester, usually while working full time. FIN500 is rarely the course that gets dropped first, but it is often the one where the work is rushed.

How We Work on FIN500 Specifically

  1. You send the module number, the problem list and any figures your instructor has changed. SEU varies the numbers between terms, so we never assume last term’s values.
  2. We work each problem with the method shown step by step, because the brief awards credit for the working.
  3. Interpretation is written as a recommendation, not a restatement of the figure.
  4. You get it back with the reasoning visible, so you can follow the method and defend it.
  5. Revisions until it is right.
