ECOM500 Business and Information Technology: SEU Help
ECOM500 Business and Information Technology is designed for students without an IT background, and SEU says so explicitly in its course description.
It is also, unusually for the SEU MBA, a course with no prerequisites on the current study plan — which makes it one of the more flexible courses to schedule.
This page covers what the course involves, how it is graded, where students lose marks, and how we help.
What Is ECOM500 Business and Information Technology?
ECOM500 is a three-credit course in Semester 4 of the SEU MBA. SEU’s course description is short and worth quoting closely: the course is suited to students with limited experience in information technology, and provides an overview of the information technologies used to maximise organisational efficiency and effectiveness.
That is the whole published description. It sets expectations usefully — this is an IT course for managers, not for technologists.
Two notes on the code. SEU has published it as both ECOM500 and ECM500, and students write both. And the current study plan lists no prerequisites for it, where an older 2020-21 plan required ECN500 and RES500. Confirm which applies to your intake.

How ECOM500 Is Graded
SEU publishes one grade distribution for the MBA, and it applies across the programme.
Component | Weight |
Assignments, critical thinking and class activities | 60% |
Final exam | 30% |
Midterm exam | 10% |
Sixty per cent of your mark sits in coursework rather than exams. That is the single most useful thing to know about how this programme is assessed, and it is why the critical thinking assignments matter more than most students assume in week one.
Your own syllabus on Blackboard breaks that 60% down further into critical thinking assignments, quizzes and discussion boards, and the split varies by course and by term. Check it in week one rather than assuming.
What ECOM500 Covers
SEU’s published description is brief. What follows is the territory students consistently report.
- The role and impact of IT in business
- Cloud computing
- Transaction processing systems
- Cybersecurity and cyberattack case analysis
- Recommendation technologies
- Website and digital presence analysis
- Data visualisation
- IT strategy and business model alignment
What Students Report Studying
ECOM500 has the richest public trace of any course in this group. Students report the following.
- Around 12 modules
- Module 1 on the role and impact of IT in business; Module 2 a cloud computing paper; Module 5 a cyberattacks case study; Module 9 a “Website Analysis” critical thinking assignment
- Critical thinking assignments at roughly Modules 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9
- Around six quizzes, including one on transaction processing systems at Module 3 and one on cybersecurity and recommendation technologies across Modules 5 and 6
- A quiz on data visualisation and IT strategy across Modules 11 and 12
- A midterm and a final exam
- The textbook is not published by SEU
This section is student-reported, not SEU-published. Module numbering and assignment titles shift between terms. Check your own Blackboard syllabus in week one.
What a Strong ECOM500 Answer Looks Like
This is a business course about technology, and the rubric reflects that.
- It answers in business terms. Cost, risk, efficiency, competitive position. Technical accuracy matters, but it is not what is being marked.
- It applies a framework to the website analysis. Usability heuristics, business model fit, conversion path — any stated framework beats an impressionistic description.
- It treats a cyberattack case as a governance failure. What controls were missing, who was accountable, what it cost. Not how the exploit worked.
- It quantifies where it can. Cloud migration arguments are much stronger with a cost comparison, even a rough one.
- It is current. IT case material dates faster than anything else on the MBA. A 2018 example in a 2026 assignment reads badly.
- It connects to organisational strategy. The course is about IT that maximises organisational effectiveness, and the best answers keep coming back to that.
Where ECOM500 Students Struggle
Writing about technology for a business rubric
The assignments are marked on business analysis, not technical accuracy. An answer that explains how cloud architecture works and never says what it would cost or save the organisation misses the point of the course.
The website analysis assignment
Module 9 asks you to analyse a website. Weak answers describe what the site looks like. Strong ones evaluate it against a stated framework and business objective.
Cybersecurity case studies
These want a management response — risk, cost, governance, communication — rather than a technical post-mortem.
Quiz density
Six quizzes across twelve modules means assessment lands roughly every fortnight, on top of the critical thinking assignments. It is a course that punishes falling behind.
Running alongside MGT675
Semester 4 contains the research project. ECOM500 is the course most often squeezed by it, which is exactly backwards given the quiz schedule.
How We Help With ECOM500
What you need | How we help |
Critical thinking assignments | Business analysis of technology decisions, written to the rubric you are actually marked against |
Website and case analysis | Applying a stated framework rather than describing what you see |
Cybersecurity cases | Framing the management response rather than the technical one |
Quiz preparation | Structured revision timed to the fortnightly quiz pattern |
Discussion boards | Your main post and both peer replies |
You stay the author. Every piece is written by a qualified human being, and nothing is generated by AI.
How We Work on ECOM500 Specifically
- You send the brief, the rubric and the module number. ECOM500’s assignments vary more between terms than most.
- We write the analysis to the business rubric rather than the technical one, which is the most common way marks are lost here.
- Case material and examples are current, because this is the course where stale examples are most obvious.
- Any framework used for website or case analysis is named and applied explicitly.
- Revisions until it is right.
