What Is MGT530 Operations Management?

MGT530 is a three-credit course in Semester 3 of the SEU MBA. SEU’s course description sets out the aim as developing an understanding of the various functions and responsibilities of the operations department in responding to competitive environments and market requirements.

What a Strong MGT530 Answer Looks Like

Operations assignments are quantitative, and the marks follow the method.

• It justifies the model choice. Say why exponential smoothing suits this demand pattern and moving average does not. The justification often carries more marks than the forecast.
• It shows the decision tree. Structure, probabilities, payoffs and expected values, all visible. An expected value with no tree is an unsupported number.
• It states assumptions up front. Every operations model rests on assumptions, and naming them is part of the answer.
• It applies DMAIC to a real process. Define, measure, analyse, improve, control — against actual defect data, not as a definition.
• It converts the calculation into an operations decision. How much to order, which supplier, whether to invest. That is what the question is asking.
• It handles units and time periods carefully. Forecasting errors in this course usually come from period mismatches, not from the formula.

It is more quantitative than the title suggests

Students arrive expecting a descriptive management course and meet decision trees and forecasting models in the first half. Plan the workload accordingly.

Forecasting method selection

Moving average, exponential smoothing and regression all produce a forecast. The marks are in choosing the right one for the demand pattern and saying why.

Decision trees need the reasoning shown

An expected value calculated correctly with no visible tree and no stated assumptions scores poorly. The structure is the answer.

Six Sigma is a method, not a vocabulary

Defining DMAIC earns nothing. Applying it to a specific process with actual defect data is the assignment.
